Marvelous.

This year was Marvel’s year to finally bring out the movie they’ve been leading up to for what seems like forever! Yes, after four years and five movies The Avengers finally assembled and none too soon as it seems all kinds of evil is conveniently waiting to destroy the world!

The hype  around this movie was so massive I was almost apprehensive about actually seeing it due to the inevitable disappointment that comes with over-hyped movies. It’s happened quite a few times to me, Avatar for example, but I can say with great pleasure that The Avengers is not such disappointment!

This is possibly the biggest superhero movie to date; definitely Marvel’s biggest. Instead of being just about one main character this movie throws together a whole truckload of them. The collective group of Avengers consists of Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and their leader Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson). Their foe is Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Thor’s brother from Asgard and he is an awesome villain.

While all the actors are great in this movie, a special mention should be made to Tom Hiddleston and his performance as Loki. He's just a fun antagonist who tends to do a lot of things because he can... Hiddleston captures all the mischief of Loki brilliantly and works brilliantly with all the characters he interacts with.

Loki’s ploy is essentially to have the world bow to him for egotistical reasons I suppose, or just to annoy Thor which is also a valid reason, he finds himself transported to Earth by his unknown allies in space. He arrives at SHIELD’s headquarters and starts raising all kinds of hell…

With Loki running amok, Nick Fury must assemble a team of fighters in an attempt to save the world! …what you were expecting Shakespeare?

The Avengers is all about being as big and as ridiculous as possible; smashing up enemies and tearing cities apart. This is the bread and butter of the modern day superhero film. If a building doesn’t fall over then your superhero movie is broken…

It does everything you expect only at a much grander scale and with several main characters and not just one. This movie takes the standard superhero action movie and throws in a big green monster who literally smashes up everything in his path. The best thing about The Avengers is that it manages to combine the best parts of all the previous movie together. The humour found in Thor for example is still very much alive in this movie just as much as Iron Man’s wisecracking and Captain America’s all round manliness!

It’s taken a while but Marvel have finally managed to make decent movies. Recently many of their film adaptations have been pretty good and The Avengers is definitely the pinnacle of their success. It’s the best movie from Marvel Studios by an absolute mile!

Most of the characters get equal amounts of screen time which is great as everyone has their favourite character (mine is Thor by the way) so nobody is really left out. Saying that Black Widow and Hawkeye get a lot less than the others do which is probably about right when you weigh it all up, Hawkeye was only in Thor for like five seconds…

When I say equal amounts of screen time by the way, I do not mean that all the actors got equal amounts of money for doing this movie… Robert Downey Jr received double the money of what everyone else got COMBINED. Did he deserve it? I suppose his name does help sell the movie but I found that fact a tad unfair…

The Avengers is just great, it’s full of everything you could ever ask for from a popcorn movie and you don’t even need to have seen the movies leading up to it. I love having pointless fanboy conversations about which character is the best, who would win in a fight between x and y, what the best bit in the movie is; I could easily go on and on about it for quite a while.

In terms of negatives, there aren’t really that many. Sure, some characters are developed a little more than others are but generally this isn’t much of an issue. Black Widow harbours the biggest question marks in this movie as she keeps going on and on about some red that she got on her ledger. I literally have no idea what this even means, and we never find out. Maybe I missed something in another movie.

I just can't fault it, I went to see a ridiculous over-the-top crossover movie and that's exactly what I got. When you go to the cinema and you see a little lad in dressed as Thor complete with a mighty hammer and everything, you know you’re in for a great movie! The only thing that could have made it better would be if he had a brother dressed as Loki!

Final Verdict: 5 Stars. Your move Batman.
