The Raid is the best action movie to mole its way into
cinemas since Die Hard. It is action in its purest form. It doesn’t mess
around, it doesn’t waste your time, it just throws you straight into the action
from the moment the curtain goes up!
The movie is about a team of Special Forces who are tasked
to raiding an apartment block ran by an organised crime drug-lord maniac. It
mainly focuses on one of the team members who is seen as a rookie but has more
weaponry in one of his fists than the whole of North Korea!
Yeah this isn’t just another action movie with guns, this
movie shows there’s more than one way to dispose of a machete wielding thug.
You could throw him down head-first onto some rather pointy broken wood, or perhaps
casually throw them out of a window or maybe just be a traditionalist and blow
them up through a door using a fridge…
This movie is high-octane to say the very least and what’s
more the story doesn’t completely suffer for it. The story is told during all
the firefights and fisticuffs, there’s no pause for it, it just flows through
along with the action.
Hard to see then, why The Raid was given so little time in
the limelight. I had to travel out of my way to see it as my local cinema
didn’t show it at all. Perhaps people see that it’s in a foreign language and
are put off or maybe the lack of marketing cash spent on the movie did it in. It’s
strange how this movie gets hardly any time in cinema screens but you just
wait, soon John Cena will be in a ‘thrilling’ action movie and it’ll be in
cinemas for weeks.
All I know is that if you’re a fan of action movies you
simply HAVE to see this movie!
Final Verdict: 5 Stars. Set in Jakarta, spoken in Indonesian
and directed by a Welshman. Perfect.
